Grafik StellungThe Bundesrechnungshof is a supreme federal authority. As an independent body of government auditing it is subject only to the law. The Bundesrechnungshof ranks equal with the Office of the Federal President, the Office of the Federal Chancellor and the federal government departments.

As an independent body of government auditing it is subject only to the law; no other public body has the right to direct the Bundesrechnungshof to conduct a specific audit mission. The Bundesrechnungshof does not judge the merits of policy decisions.

The status of the Bundesrechnungshof, its Members and its key functions are guaranteed by the Constitution (Article 114, paragraph 2 of the German Basic Law). Further details are set forth in other legislation (see Legal Bases).

The Bundesrechnungshof’s headquarters are located in Bonn. In Potsdam, the Bundesrechnungshof has a branch office.
