Bundesrechnungshof message on the corona crisis

Symbolbild - Coronavirus

The COVID 19 pandemic poses enormous challenges for individuals, society and the government. The federal government and the federal states are doing their utmost to mitigate the impact of the virus on public health. The first and foremost goal is to take all the necessary steps to protect citizens and their families against the coronavirus. The German SAI also pursues this goal. We have taken appropriate steps to this end. For the time being, physical presence of our staff at our offices has been suspended. With the exception of a core team, that ensures workable central support services and infrastructures, all staff have worked from home since mid-March. Official travel, field work, all events and meetings have been suspended until further notice. The President of the German SAI complies with the recommendations issued by the federal government.

At the same time, we continue to perform our constitutional mandate, ensuring effective external state audit of the federal government. We pursue our auditing, reporting and advisory work. In doing so, we duly take into account the difficult times we are facing and the particular situation of the audited body. We ensure business continuity at any time. In particular, our advisory role towards parliament and the government continues to have high priority. As to the vast relief and stimulus package adopted by parliament to address the impacts of the coronavirus outbreak, we sent an initial analysis and assessment paper to Parliament’s Budget Committee. Our SAI’s President, Kay Scheller, acknowledged the efforts and the commitment of government and parliament and announced to appropriately monitor any steps taken to implement the package effectively and at a brisk pace within our mandate and capabilities.
