Federal Ministry of Defence stops naval aircraft modernisation in response to our recommendation

In stopping modernisation, the Ministry complied with a decision made by the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee, a sub-committee of the Budget Committee. The Committee resolution was based on our recommendation to conduct a comprehensive reassessment of the project and then decide on the scope of modernisation needed. Our findings suggested that modernising the old and obsolete naval aircraft would no longer provide any value for money. Initially, in 2015, the Federal Armed Forces concluded contracts worth more than €500 million. Planning errors and the costs for inspections, repairs and services additionally contracted out – such as a new radar system – significantly added to the project costs. Additional costs would have amounted to €340 million or more. This also put the goal of modernising all aircraft by year-end 2025 further out of reach.
